Stop hidden mobile charges.

You're paying much more than you should be. And that's not fair.

What are Mobile Termination Rates?

Mobile Termination Rates are the fees charged when you call a friend on a different mobile network, or call their mobile from your landline. In doing so, the other mobile network charges your operator a fee for carrying the call. But it’s you who pays the price...

Mobile Termination Rates or MTRs make up around 4.7p or more for every minute of the call, and it’s the main reason why calls to mobiles are more expensive than landline calls.

Why we think it is important and what we are doing about it...

We at 3 are dedicated to making the mobile phone industry fairer and better value for everyone. Our recent launch of free phone calls with Skype is a perfect example of this. We think MTRs are a rip-off; this outdated charge costs UK landline customers alone £750m per year, more than £2m every day.

We believe that there’s no need for the UK public to pay more than 10 times what they would pay to make a call from one landline to another. We want Mobile Termination Rates to be reduced, and to reflect what they actually cost – around a penny or less.

So what are we doing about it? To stand up against unfair MTRs and lobby for change we, alongside BT, MoneySupermarket.com, the Federation of Small Businesses, Carers UK, the GMB (Britain’s General Trade Union) and the NUS, have launched a campaign called Terminate the Rate. Our aim is to lobby industry regulator Ofcom for a significant reduction in termination rates by 2011.

We want MTRs drastically reduced for the good of every UK phone user. Without Mobile Termination Rates we’d be able to offer you even better deals. We’re talking about the kind of deals you’ve never heard of before; like all the calls you can make to UK landlines and mobiles for a flat fee each month (with extra services included too).

How about £35 a month for ‘all-you-can-eat’ unlimited calls to standard landlines and UK mobiles? This would also include unlimited texts to UK mobiles, as well as an unlimited use of internet communication services, like Skype and Windows Live Messenger in the UK (which we already offer you now).

Want Cheaper Mobile Phone Calls? Help Us Make It Happen -

This would be available with a choice of free mobile phones. There would be no hidden or unfair charges and a very fair Fair Use policy.

When there are no, or very low, termination rates, competition will be given free reign. Our most notable example of when healthy competition benefited the consumer is with our Mobile Broadband deals. 3 took what was once a very high-priced product, struggling for market take-up, and brought in mass market pricing of £15 for 3GB of data.

The flow-through effects from this kind of pricing have been clear for all to see, with more value in the data allowances associated with Mobile Broadband, and a dramatic drop in prices across all operators that offer this service. This is a clear example of the positive impact 3 can have when artificial pricing barriers aren’t put in place.
