It's your number.

we're pushing for faster, easier number porting

What is it?

Mobile Number Portability is the ability to move your mobile number from one operator to another. Mobile Number Portability is the right of any customer to keep their number, whatever operator they choose to use. It guarantees that customers can retain their mobile identity if they find an operator that offers them a better deal.

Any customer who wants to change network and keep their number is forced to go to their current operator and request a code known as a Porting Authority or 'PAC' to give to their new network. Operators often try to make this difficult, frustrating the process.

In Ireland where the process is recipient-led (handled by the operator that the customer chooses to join) the process takes a maximum of two hours and often just a few minutes.

Why we think this is important...

If customers can't port their number to another network easily and without fear of losing the use of their number then most won't port. This stifles competition because there is a barrier to switching to whichever operator is offering them the best value.

At 3 we think two-days is too long and a recent review by the mobile industry’s regulator Ofcom agreed. Ofcom has said that all numbers should be ported within two hours. 3 will continue to push for faster, easier porting as it is best for competition and best for the consumer.
