We’ve selected some of our favourite apps – ideal if you’re just getting started with your smartphone. Give them a go and start getting more out of your phone!

Barclays football app

Barclays Football. (free, iPhone and Android)

Don’t miss a moment: get all the football scores, all the time. If the pub you’re in isn’t showing the match you want to see, don’t worry – you’ll be able to see live commentary on your phone. See player stats on the Barclays Premier League, enter competitions, watch video highlights and find out about upcoming fixtures.

Cut the rope app

Cut the Rope. (£0.69, iPhone and £0.62, Android)

It’s so addictive, we’re not sure we should be telling you about this one. The aim of the game is to feed Om Nom the monster with the candy at the end of the rope by cutting it at the right time and letting it drop into his mouth. With endless levels it’s satisfyingly easy to start with – but the more you play, the more head-scratchingly puzzling it gets.

eBay app

eBay. (free,  iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerryWindows Phone)

Using the eBay app on your mobile is a great way to bag a last-minute bargain. eBay’s based on auctions, so you’ve got to be ready and waiting to make sure you’re the highest bidder when the auction ends. That’s why the eBay app is ideal – you won’t miss out on your item just because you couldn’t get to a computer in time.

Words with Friends app

Words with Friends Free. (free,  iPhone and Android )

Challenge your mates to a match or play against a random opponent in this board game for the digital age. We’d recommend playing this Scrabble-esque word puzzle any time you feel your brain needs a bit of a workout. Plus there’s room for a bit of friendly banter with in-game chat messaging.

Facebook app

Facebook. (free, iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, Nokia, Windows Phone)

Now it’s even easier to stay up to date with what your friends are doing with the app version of the world’s most popular social network. Share all your experiences in seconds, wherever you go. Instantly upload photos from your phone, send messages, tag friends, check in, update your status and more.

Jelly Defense app

Jelly Defense. (£1.99,  iPhone and £2.45  Android)

Position your one-eyed jelly defenders to defeat the invaders of their planet! Even if you’re not a hardcore gaming fan you’ll love this Jelly world, with its fantastic graphics, bizarre sound effects and seriously cute wibbly wobbly characters. A tower defence game with a difference.

The Three app

The Three app. (free, iPhone and Android)

We couldn’t talk about apps without mentioning the Three app. If you’re on Three, this gives you instant access to your balance, bills, activity and more in your My3 account, plus specific support tailored to your device. And it’s not all techie either – there’s a fun bubble game to keep you amused as well.
