What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is a fast-growing social media platform

There’s no doubt about it, social media has taken over. With websites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn growing inpopularity, there are very few people who haven’t dabbled in the world of online sharing.

At Discover, we’re always interested in bringing you new trends and exploring their benefits, so here we bring you the lowdown on one of the fastest growing social media platforms – Pinterest. Pinterest is becoming more and more popular, but what is it, who is it really for and what can you get out of it?

What is Pinterest?
In the simplest terms it’s a sharing platform where you ‘pin’ pictures to an online board. It’s a picture-sharing site, so it’s similar to Instagram in some ways, but because you can pin any images you find on the web (as well as your own) it has more of a scrap-booking feel to it. You can create categories of pictures that inspire you and share them with other people. And in addition to pinning pictures, you can pin videos and join discussion groups.

When would you use Pinterest?
It seems that Pinterest began as a site where users mainly posted pictures of their family, their pets and their holidays. And at this point it probably wasn’t offering much more than Instagram. But as the platform has grown, so has the potential of Pinterest. Now people browse pinboards created by strangers to discover new things and get inspiration. Getting married? Use Pinterest to gather ideas for your big day. Re-decorating? Check out other peoples’ interior design efforts before you get started. And as well as gathering ideas from other people’s pinboards you can share what you’ve discovered and set up mood boards for the things that have inspired or affected you.

Who uses Pinterest?
Although it started as a platform for everyday users who wanted to organise and share their pictures with the world, now business owners are using it to market their products and distribute brand messages. Everyone and anyone can use Pinterest and because it’s designed for quick and easy sharing, it’s perfect for when you’re out and about with your smartphone.
