Apps for kids

For some people, the mere thought of a two-year-old getting their sticky mitts on their precious iPad is unthinkable. But putting tech into little hands is a great way of getting them learning.

And if you’ve got children, you’ll know that a little bit of tablet time can buy you that all-important extra five minutes, so you can put the kettle on.

However, there’s a growing mountain of apps out there, all jostling for your kids’ attention, so which ones are worthy of making it onto your tablet? Here are a few suggestions to get you started…

World of Goo

World of Goo - iPad (£1.99)

You can’t go wrong with anything that has the word ‘goo’ in it. Kids love a bit of goo. It’s won countless awards and is adored by millions around the world.

Angry Birds Star Wars II

Angry Birds Star Wars II - iPad, Android, Windows Phone (free)

The unstoppable force of Angry Birds meets the immovable sci-fi legend that is, Star Wars. This is a recipe for success if ever we saw one, and the fact that it’s free is an added bonus.

Minecraft Pocket Edition - iPad, Android (£4.99)

This is the so-called ‘Pocket Edition’ - maybe because at that price, it empties them. But if you’ve got slightly bigger kids who love nothing more than building stuff, this one is definitely worth splashing out on.

CBeebies Playtime

CBeebies Playtime - iPad, Android, Windows Phone (free)

For many parents Mr Tumble and Mr Maker are pretty much part of the furniture. So the CBeebies Playtime app is a must for keeping your little ones entertained and educated at the same time. Swashbuckle Island Adventure and Alphablocks are just two of the familiar favourites, ideal for tiny tots.

Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics - iPad, Android (free)

Now your kids (and you) can immerse yourselves in the Marvel Universe, where Iron Man and his colourful pals live. Whether it’s for the kids, or for you, there are endless past editions of these timeless classics at your fingertips (though note that some of them aren’t free).

Monsta Points

Monsta Points - iPad (free)

Now there’s an app that’ll help around the house (well it’s an app that gets your kids to help out, but it’s cunningly disguised as a bit of fun). If you’re trying to get your little one to tidy up after themselves, dress themselves, brush their teeth or generally pull their weight, this is a brilliant app that helps teach life skills to kids. Monsta Points adds some fun and focus to the whole painstaking process and can turn chores into a fun, rewarding activity. Everyone’s a winner!

And for the grown-ups…

Plants versus Zombies

Plants versus Zombies - iPad (£0.69)

Easily one of the silliest, yet most addictive games on the planet. You’ll lose hours of your life, but your kids will think you’re the coolest parent ever.
