Data allowances on your phone.

If you love browsing, shopping, posting, Instagramming, Tweeting, watching movies, streaming music or using apps on your phone, the chances are you don’t like having to keep an eye on how much mobile data you’re using. If you’ve got an All-you-can-eat data plan there’s no need to worry – you can get online as much as you like.

Understanding your data allowance.

Whether you’re cautious with your smartphone or you’re more relaxed about out-of-bundle spending, getting to grips with exactly what data is and sussing out how it’s measured can be tricky. Gigabytes and megabytes can seem like a minefield. But fear not, we’re here to help. Let’s make sure you’re making the most of your phone and your allowance, and getting the best value for money...

First things first: what is data?

In a nutshell, whenever you use the internet on your iPhone or Android phone, you’re using data.

Different activities use varying amounts of data, and the way data is consumed is pretty common sense.

For example, simple tasks like catching up with friends on Facebook, or looking up the opening hours of your local restaurant won’t require too much data. But downloading hilarious cat gifs or streaming an entire Barry White album is a lot more demanding, and will therefore eat up a lot more data. Sometimes, using apps can lead to confusion when it comes to data. So how do you know whether or not you’re using data?

How is data measured?

It’s all about megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB). There are around 1000MB in 1GB.
