Ten tips on switching to Three article header image

Will you be saying goodbye to data limits and switching to Three? It’s easy – and even easier with this quick checklist.

There’s plenty of practical stuff to figure out when you switch networks. Like telling your old network provider you’re leaving, recycling your old handset - and more importantly, picking your shiny new deal.

And because we don’t think you should have to work all this out for yourself, we’re giving you a headstart with ten practical tips and a page jam-packed with must-see links that’ll help you get going with Three.

   1. What’s our signal like near you?

   2. Try Three with a SIM.

   3. Check your phone is 3G.

   4. Is your phone unlocked?

   5. Count the hours till your new phone arrives.

   6. Move your number in less than a day.

   7. Get a friendly welcome.

   8. Start making the most of all-you-can-eat data.

   9. Find help that’s tailored to your phone.

 10. See your account info online and on your mobile.

1. What’s our signal like near you?

If you want to get the most out of all-you-can-eat data, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got great signal where you live. First port of call: our coverage checker. Just enter your postcode and the map shows what the Three signal’s like in your area. And don’t forget to check where you work and play as well.

2. Still got a contract elsewhere? Try Three with a SIM.

Not sure if Three’s for you? Order a free SIM here – it’ll be with you the next day. Try out the network and make sure you get coverage. Or get a Pay As You Go SIM with all-you-can-eat data for £15 and use it alongside your current contract, and start enjoying life without data limits.

3. If you’re getting a SIM, check your phone is 3G.

Our network’s built for data - and that means it’s totally 3G. So if you’ve got an older phone that only works on 2G networks, you won’t be able to benefit from our all-you-can-eat data plans. Use our neat little trick to test whether your phone’s 3G: text ‘Mobile’ to 78333. (Not sure what 3G is? Click here.)

4. Make sure your new SIM will work: is your phone unlocked?

Often when you buy a phone it’s ‘locked’ to one network so you can’t use other networks’ SIMs in it. So if your current phone was originally from another network provider, you’ll need to make sure it’s  unlocked for the Three network

5.  Count the hours till your new phone arrives.

If you’ve ordered your new phone online, check our delivery info to see when it’ll be with you. Wait in and take delivery yourself, or you’ll get a note through your letterbox telling you where to pick it up from. Getting a SIM? It’ll come in the post.

6. Move your number in less than a day.

There’s no need to send text messages to everyone in your address book to tell them your new number. To keep your old one, let your old network provider know you’re leaving and get a PAC code – find the contact number for your network here. Then you don’t even need to call us – just fill in our online form and we’ll move your number ASAP.

7. Get a friendly welcome.

When you join Three, visit our Welcome page. You’ll find links to everything you need to get started, from setting up your email to moving your contacts and viewing your allowances. And it’s all written in straightforward, non-techie language.

8. Start making the most of all-you-can-eat data.

Get set up with loads of apps – for some suggestions to get you started, check out our Discover Apps page. Explore your app store or market and browse different categories to find apps you’ll love using. From running and horoscopes to brain teasers and shopping apps, there’ll be something to tempt you.

9. Find help that’s tailored to your phone.

Forget doing battle with the bundles of paper that arrive in the box. If your phone’s proving difficult to set up, head to our support pages. From a searchable PDF of your phone’s manual to videos and step-by-step setup guides, you’ll find loads of help, all in one place. Lots of the answers use screenshots, so you can follow the steps easily on your phone.

10. See your account info online and on your mobile.

Even if you don’t have to worry about data limits, you’ll probably still want to check other things in your account. In your My3 account, you can change your contact details, see your bills or credit balance, change roaming settings and keep an eye on your calls, texts and internet use.

You can also instantly access your My3 account when you use the free Three app for iPhone and  Android.
