If you own a mobile phone, tablet or laptop, then you’ve probably come across the term ‘roaming’.
But there can be some negative press when it comes to roaming and your wallet, so it’s important to understand what it’s all about. Here’s your jargon-free guide to roaming in 2015, and using your data abroad at no extra cost with Three.
What is roaming?
Broadly speaking, roaming refers to using your device when you go outside of your mobile operator’s coverage area. For example, texting, calling or using the internet and apps on a device when you’re on holiday. Using the internet abroad is also known as data roaming.
When does mobile roaming happen?
When you travel internationally (assuming that you don’t have roaming switched off) your device won’t be able to hook up to the network it normally uses in the UK. Instead it will ‘roam’ and find another network to connect to.
Thanks to global cooperative agreements between networks, it’s possible to establish a local connection in most countries. While that means you can still use your device, you nevertheless have to be aware that this can incur higher charges than you’re used to.
Your mobile roaming service.
Different mobile operators charge different rates for using data outside of the UK - and it is very easy to rack up some hefty bills with some providers.

Managing mobile roaming when abroad.
You can trigger data roaming fees in a few different ways. That might be making or receiving a text or call, browsing your favourite website, sending an email or downloading a document.
You can even get charged for receiving a voicemail, so it’s easy to rack up a big charge.
But because we believe in helping you manage your costs, we’ve set a worldwide data roaming limit of £39/month. This applies if you’re not in a Feel At Home destination, and if you’re in a Feel At Home destination but go over your usual allowance. You can adjust this limit as you wish, but it’s a standard limit that’s applied to every customer to prevent bill shock. You can also turn off data roaming on your device altogether if you prefer.
