With all that incredible technology, comes a lot of techno-babble. That's where this jargon buster steps in. Our aim here is to make things as clear as Cinderella's crystal slippers (given a rigorous, magical polish by Mary Poppins).

This is the directory enquiries service if you need a landline telephone number. To use this service, call 195 from your 3 mobile.
This stands for 2nd Generation network. It lets you make and receive calls and send and receive text messages (SMS).
Like a Zip file on a computer, 3GP is a compressed data file that makes high-quality music tracks and videos small enough to store on your mobile.
These are free calls that you make to other mobiles on 3. They're generally included as part of your price plan, if you're on Pay Monthly or our latest Pay As You Go plan.
This stands for Assisted Global Positioning System. It's how your mobile communicates with GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites and local base stations to find out where it is.
Alerts are sent to your mobile as either a text message (SMS) or multimedia message (MMS). They're a quick, simple way to keep up on what matters to you as soon as it happens. like the footballs scores or this week's winning lottery numbers. We'll only send you Alerts if you set them up.
Allowances are the amounts of minutes, texts or data that is included as part of your deal. Exactly what you get depends on your price plan.
Bandwidth is the amount of network space that's available or used to carry all types of traffic - which can mean everything from voice calls to browsing the internet. Bandwidth speed is usually expressed in bits per second.
This is when we block a mobile from making certain types of calls to numbers like Premium rate or International numbers. We can also block numbers that make or send nuisance calls or texts.

This is the term used for measuring the smallest unit of computer data. Eight bits make up one byte. To give you an idea of just how small a Bit is, a full page of text on a computer is made up of about 16,000 bits.
BLOG (Short for web log) is a collection of words, images, videos or all three that are published on a website.
The software that lets you surf the internet on your computer or your mobile. All 3 mobiles automatically come with a browser.
A byte is 8 bits, which is the smallest unit of computer data. A thousand bytes make up 1 kilobyte (KB) and a million bytes equal 1 megabyte (MB). To give you an idea of size, a high-quality digital photo is around 3MB in size.
Caller ID lets you see the phone number of the person calling you on your mobile's screen. If you've saved that number as a contact, the name should appear.
An abbreviation of compressor-decompressor. Codec is like the software that allows you to create Zip files on computers, only for mobile phones. It squeezes large files (audio, video and picture) into smaller files so that you can store more of them on your mobile.
This refers to the reach of our network - and is measured by how much of the UK population we cover.
This is what you do when you transfer a video, audio, image or computer file from the internet, Mobile internet or Planet 3 straight to your mobile or your computer.
Digital Rights Management is the technology used to prevent copyright-protected things like ringtones or music videos being shared.
Our music service that lets you download any track from Planet 3 to both your mobile and computer - but you pay for this only once.
This stands for Global Positioning Systems. Most 3 mobiles have built-in GPS, which uses radio signals to tell you exactly where you are in the world, by listening to satellites. GPS is also found in cars, boats and other vehicles.
This stands for Global System for Mobile Communications. It's a common 'language' used by mobile networks and lets you use your mobile abroad.
This stands for High Speed Uplink Packet Access, which is a fast way to transfer data from mobile phones and USB modems (dongles) to the internet. This is ideal for quickly uploading photos to your favourite sites or attaching files to emails, for example.
International Mobile Equipment Identifier is your mobile's unique 15-digit ID number. If you need to find your IMEI, key in *#06# (star, hash, zero, six, hash) or look under the battery compartment.
Infrared lets you swap data with any other infrared devices such as a laptop, within a short range of around five metres (provided there's no object between the two devices). It's like Bluetooth, but slower.

This is the email service you get from an Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as BT, rather than a free email service you get through the web, such as Hotmail.
This is the computer programming language, commonly used on mobile phones for things like games. You'll also find it on web servers and other applications.

Megabits per second (Mbps) is how the speed of your internet connection is measured, 1 Mbps is 1,000,000 bits of data trasmitted or received in a second.
This stands for Multimedia Messaging Service, but most people know it as Picture Messaging. With this service you can send photos, videos and audio clips and graphics, as well as text.
Mobile Broadband is the service that lets you use the internet on the move or at home, on your laptop or computer. All you need is one of our dongles.
This carries all of your calls, texts and internet data. It's made up of base stations around the country to give you a complete service.
Our Mobile Wi-Fi service is called MiFi®. It uses a wireless modem to send out a Wi-Fi signal to create your own Wi-Fi hotspot. This means you can connect to different Wi-Fi devices to the internet at once. So while you're checking emails on your laptop you can download tracks and apps on your iPod touch.
This is a BLOG that's posted on the internet from a mobile phone. Most Moblogs contain photos and clips taken on a mobile phone camera.
This is a data file format for videos as well as music. The mobile version of an MP4 file is usually called a 3GP file.
A netbook is a small portable laptop computer. It's designed to access the internet with a wireless connection.
These are companies, like 3 and BT, who are licensed to run a communications network.

This is the independent regulator for the UK television, radio and telecommunications industries.

This term describes the quietest and cheapest time to make calls on mobile networks, which normally means at evening and weekends. Our rates are the same whatever the hour of the day so you're not restricted in when you use your mobile. See also Peak time.
The Office of The Telecommunications Ombudsman (Otelo) is the organisation that looks into complaints against UK mobile network operators. The service is free and independent.

This is what you can do with two Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as a mobile and laptop. This means you can send information from one device to the other.
Pay As You Go means you're not tied into a contract. You just buy a mobile - or a SIM - and then top up with credit when you need it. If you prefer a fixed monthly bill, choose Pay Monthly.
Pay Monthly means you have a contract with us that lasts for a set number of months (usually 18 or 24) and you receive a monthly bill. Depending on your contract, you also get a choice of the latest mobile phones included in the price. Various price plans are available.

Sometimes referred to as a multimedia message (MMS), you use these to send a picture or video.
These are ringtones that are different to the original version of a song or track. If you want the original version you need a realtune.
This function on your mobile guesses the word you're trying to type in as you type it. On your mobile this option is known as T9.

This stands for Personal Unlock Key. It's what you need to get from us if you enter the wrong PIN on your mobile three times in a row and it 'locks'.

This is a quicker way for you to download large audio or video files from our network. Instead of waiting for the whole file to download, Quickplay sends a continuous flow of data to your mobile or laptop.
Unlike a polyphonic ringtone, a Realtune is a mobile ringtone that comes from a real music track.
If you're having a problem with your mobile, we might ask you to turn your mobile off, and then on again. We call this a reboot.
A reflash is when we upgrade the operating software on your mobile. It's what we sometimes do if you send us your mobile to be repaired. If you ever need your mobile repaired, make sure you back up anything you want to keep on your mobile's memory before you send it in, as a reflash will also wipe the memory clean.
RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Lots of news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers offer their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. RSS is good for people who regularly use the web. It allows them to easily stay informed as they get the latest content from the sites they're interested in.
These are five-digit text numbers, normally preceded by a word (e.g. text GAMES to 84263). This service is usually used for things like buying Premium Rate Services or to enter competitions by text.
On some mobiles, you can also set up shortcodes for numbers stored in your contacts or address book. To see if you can do this, check your user guide.
This stands for (Universal) Subscriber Identity Module. It's a small printed circuit board that contains everything to make a mobile work properly. Without a SIM, your mobile won't be able to access the network to make calls, send texts and go on the internet.
This allows you to get a 3 SIM to use on Pay As You Go or Pay Monthly without having to buy a phone. You can put the SIM into any 3G mobile to enjoy all the benefits of being with 3.

Skype on 3 is a free internet service that gives you free Skype-to-Skype calls and free 'chats' (instant messages) from the UK to other people who use Skype in the UK or around the world. You can also make low-cost international calls and chats with Skype 'Call Phones Abroad' to people who aren't using Skype, whether they're on a mobile phone or a landline. It works whenever you're connected to our 3 network.

This is when you call someone and talk 'face-to-face' on your mobile screens.

This is like a picture message, only with video instead. Everyone with a 3 mobile can send video messages. Check your User Guide for more details.
This is the answering service where people can leave a message if you miss their call. Everyone on 3 has voicemail and listening to them in the UK is free on Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go. To see how your voicemail works, check your User Guide.
This stands for Wireless Application Protocol. It's one of the technologies that make it possible for you to surf the web from your mobile.
These are free email services that you access via the internet, like Hotmail, Google Mail and Yahoo! Mail.
