How to make Christmas even more magical

There’s only one more sleep to go! 🎅

Kids around the world are getting ready for Father Christmas and his reindeer to arrive, leaving plates of mince pies and carrots out, along with a glass of milk (or something stronger 😉) and they’ll be trying their hardest to stay up as long as possible, hoping to catch a glimpse of the illusive man in the red suit…

Want to make it even more special for the little ones in your life? We’ve found some ways to add a little extra magic to Christmas.

Track Santa on his way around the world

The Google Santa Tracker lets you and your family follow Father Christmas on his journey around the world on Christmas Eve. You can watch as he prepares to leave the North Pole and once he’s on his way, you can see where in the world he is, info on his next stop and how many gifts have been delivered. And, if you don’t want to miss a thing, you can get occasional updates from St. Nick himself!

Get a personalised video message from Santa Claus

If you want to surprise your little angel with a personalised call or video message from Santa then the  Portable North Pole  (iOS and Android) does just that. Santa also lets them know if they’re on the Naughty or Nice list…

Seeing is believing…

With Catch Santa – Capture the magic (iOS and Android), you can capture a picture of Father Christmas beside your Christmas tree, bringing the festive magic right to your living room!

And now it’s time to sprinkle some sparkly reindeer food outside and wait patiently for Father Christmas to arrive…

How to save your leftovers this Christmas

You’re bloated, you’re full up and your dad’s already fallen asleep in front of the tv in a food coma. But instead of throwing the rest of your food his Christmas, don’t let your leftover turkey and stuffing go to waste; use Three’s top tips to make the most of it.

Donate to a food bank or shelter

Christmas is a time for giving, and at this time of year there can be a real stretch on resources for shelters and food banks. Help your waistline, your conscience and your fellow citizens that’re down on their luck by donating leftover food such as chocolates, unopened biscuits and mince pies. Find a food bank near you.

Recreate your favourite recipes!

There’s plenty of recipe apps, including Tasty, BBC Good Food and Yummly, that will get you back in the kitchen! From turkey stir fry to Christmas pizza, there’s so many ways to keep turkey interesting and save yourself some money for the post-Christmas struggle. With our Unlimited data plans on SIM, you’ll be able to browse recipes as much as you like.

Olio

Olio is branding itself as the food sharing revolution, and when it comes to reducing waste, they’re all over it! It connects you to your neighbours and local shops. If you’re looking to get rid of your leftovers, you can post them up for free and people can get in touch with you to take them off your hands. Similarly, if you’re looking for something specific, you can post “wanted” adverts too, and pick up what you need for the small small price of completely free!

Now you know exactly what to plan for your leftovers, check back for our final article on Christmas Eve, to find out just how Three can help you make Christmas magical!

Saturday 22nd December:
Go Roam at Christmas

Are you going to be abroad for Christmas this year? Will you be having your Christmas dinner in the sunshine? Or, are you planning a magical Christmas in Santa’s official home: Lapland?

Whatever you’re doing, you’re going to want to be able to stay in touch with your loved ones while you’re away – Christmas is all about spending time with the people closest to you, after all.

If you’re in a Go Roam destination (there are over 70 worldwide) then you can use your phone, just like you do at home for no extra cost. That means you can call your Gran, FaceTime your mum and Snapchat your mates ‘til your heart’s content without running up a huge bill, because that’s not very festive, is it?

If you’re not convinced about spending Christmas in the sunshine then check out some of these Christmas holiday pics sent to us recently from amazing places like The Alps and New Zealand (using Go Roam, of course)…Thanks to everyone who shared pictures with us!

Friday 21st December:
How to save battery on your phone in the run up to Christmas.

Is your phone getting a bit tired? Does the battery not last as long as it used to? Are you always on the lookout for a charger?

You’re probably holding out for Santa bringing you a shiny new phone with excellent battery life (the Huawei Mate 20 Pro lasts a full 2 days without charging, just sayin’ 😍).

But ’til then, how are you going to deal with your battery life dilemma? Here are some tips on how to save battery on your phone, to make sure the run up to Christmas stays full of endless festive playlists and you’ve got enough battery life left to do some emergency Christmas shopping on the way home.

Turn down screen brightness

Infinity-pool-like screens are awesome but, bigger, brighter screens can drain your battery. Turn down your screen brightness and save yourself a chunk of battery life.

Switch off mobile data

Not completely, just temporarily for the apps and stuff you’re not using. It’s an easy way to squeeze out some extra battery life.

And, you never know, you might manage to get some more Christmas shopping done without social media distracting you…

Turn off automatic app updates

Similar to turning off mobile data, turning off automatic app updates can help save you some important battery life that could be better used binge-watching Christmas movies with Go Binge.

Spending Christmas abroad? Don’t forget to check back here tomorrow…

Thursday 20th December:

The best present ideas for…Your partner!

Struggling for Christmas present ideas for your partner? Starting to panic that you’re running out of shopping time before the big day? Or, do you rely on the fear to get the job done?

Either way, we’re here to help with some ideas for Christmas presents

For the budding photographer

Are they all about getting a pic for the ‘gram? Does every meal need to be photographed from 50 different angles, looking for the best light? Are they always on the lookout for a selfie op?

Why not treat them to a Google Pixel 3 for Christmas this year? Its 12.2MP auto-focus, dual-pixel rear camera with phase detection and a dual-lens, front-facing camera make it the perfect Christmas gift for the wannabe photographer in your life.

And, that’s not all, with the Pixel 3, you get free unlimited online storage for all photos and videos uploaded to Google photos from your Pixel 3 (through to 31st January 2022).

For the Apple fanatic

If your other half loves Apple devices then you know they’ve been drooling over the iPhone XS since September, right? We don’t blame them; a beautiful top-to-bottom, edge-to-edge, 5.8-in Super Retina OLED display, a dual-lens 12MP camera with wide and telephoto lenses and a 7MP front-facing camera, what’s not to love?

So, if you want to earn yourself some serious brownie points, make sure there’s an iPhone XS under the tree for your partner this Christmas.

If they’re the clumsy type…

If your significant other spends more time picking their poor, battered phone up off the floor than actually using it, then they need a Tech21 phone case in their stocking this Christmas. Not only do Tech21 phone cases look good, they protect phones drop after drop.

Check back here tomorrow for some battery saving tips to help your phone make it through the festive period.

Monday 17th December:
The charity Christmas No. 1 contenders…

You’re likely sick of Christmas songs by now.  We agree; if we hear one more rendition of All I Want For Christmas, we might scream. Instead, we’ve taken to listening to these amazing charity Christmas singles, all vying for No.1. They’re original, new and fun, and they’re all raising money for amazing causes at the same time. What’s not to love? If you want that festive goodwill feeling, help your favourite charities or songs without using any of your data on Apple Music with Go Binge.

1. Light UpFlakefleet Primary School

This adorable Christmas hit is an underdog, but we just love the heart and soul of the youngsters that have worked so hard on it! It’s got a great video, and all the proceeds from the song go to the Alzheimer’s Society, which is the perfect Christmas gift for so many families.

2. We Built This City – LadBaby

If you don’t know the name Mark Hoyle, you’ll probably recognise his viral superstar alter-ego, LadBaby! This comedic father made a name for himself sharing hilarious clips of his life and his ways of trying to make parenthood easier. Now, he and his family have teamed up to try and hit No. 1, with all profits going to the Trussell Trust, who support food banks nationwide. A fun hit, and a good deed, all wrapped into one. Yes mate!

3. Rock With Rudolph – The Celebs

Our final charity No.1 bid comes from a collection of celebrity faces, from Anne Hegerty (The Chase, I’m A Celebrity) to Dani Harmer (Tracey Beaker, Strictly Come Dancing). This idea was coined by Eastenders star Kara Tointon; one Christmas hit to beat them all! All proceeds are going to Great Ormond Street hospital, so you can help to give a sick child the best Christmas present ever.

Sunday 16th December: Save money with Three this Christmas

It’s the most expensive time of the yeaaar…! It’s okay. We understand! Christmas is awesome, because you might get a few days off work, you get to see your family, and you get the best food you’ll eat all year, but it also racks up one heck of a cost. However, Three can help you with keeping Christmas on a budget.

Once you’re settled into your post-Christmas dinner food coma, what’s better than sticking on a good movie and just relaxing in front of the telly? Not much! And if you’re with Three on a 12GB data plan or more, you can Go Binge on your favourite Christmas classics without using any of your data on Netflix or TV Player.

Or, if Christmas movies aren’t your thing, use Apple Music, Deezer, or even SoundCloud to listen to endless, unlimited Christmas tunes, all day long. The best part? Go Binge is automatically applied, and doesn’t cost you anything extra!

Maybe this year, you’re spending Christmas far, far away in an exotic land and your parents are feeling a little left behind. You don’t need to worry if you’re with Three, because with Go Roam, you’ll be able to keep in touch with all your loved ones back in the UK for no extra cost. Go Roam lets you call and text the UK, and use your data, in over 70 countries in the world. So, whether your parents are calling from a beach in New Zealand or you’re checking in on your Gran from Rome, you’re guaranteed to save yourself some money and win favour with the family.

There’s one more way that you can have a budget Christmas with Three; we’re just full of surprises! If you’re not already using wuntu, where have you been? Saturday 15th December: Crack the Christmas dinner with Three

Everyone knows that Christmas dinner is one of the most important duties. It’s also super stressful for the chef, and there’s no end of worrying whether that turkey is going to be cooked all the way through.

Have no fear; Three are here to make Christmas dinner your easiest task, all because #PhonesAreGood! Check out our top tips for using your phone to make Christmas dinner a doddle.

Tip #1: Make use of  your calculator!

Long gone are the days of spelling a certain word with “80085”on your calculator. Now, you can use it to accurately work out how long to cook turkey for! You should aim to cook your turkey for 40 minutes per kilo for the first 4 kilos, then 45 minutes for every kilo over that.

Tip #2: Recipe apps are your friend!

Looking for that perfect roasted potato? With the amount of recipe apps in the App and Play stores, you never need wonder again. Some of our favourites are the Tasty app, Smart Recipes and Pinterest, all of which are completely free!

Tip #3: Your phone timer exists, and it’s super useful

Not just designed for those intense HIT workouts at the gym (or for seeing how quickly you can eat 10 After Eight mints…). Use it to track your cooking time of all the different parts to your meal, so you know exactly when to put your roasted parsnips in to coincide with not over-boiling your sprouts!

So, there you have it. Make Christmas easier on yourself. And, don’t forget to check back here tomorrow when we’ll be sharing some money saving tips…

Friday 14th December: The best phone games to play after Christmas dinner

The last cracker’s been pulled, there’s been at least one disagreement about who got that tiny packet of screwdrivers and everyone’s paper hats are starting to droop. But, before you settle in for a lazy evening of eating endless chocolates, it’s time for some after dinner games.

If you’re looking for the best games to play with family after Christmas dinner, we’ve got some of our favourite phone games that are perfect.

Heads Up! (iOS and Android)
Holding your phone against your head, guess the word on the screen using just the clues from your friends/family. The aim of the game is to get as many right answers before the timer runs out. And, the app records everyone’s clues too so, you can re-watch the hilarity ‘til your heart’s content.

Reverse Charades (iOS)
A twist on a classic. Instead of one person acting out words for the team, the entire team chooses 30, 60 or 90 second rounds to act out as many words as one person can guess.

Who can’t draw? (iOS and Android)
Like other drawing board games, but without the need of pens and paper. You’re given a clue and have 15 seconds to create the best impression of it as you can, before passing it on to the next player. Then they do the same but, the only clue they get is your drawing…

Don’t forget to check back here tomorrow for tips on how your phone can help you sort out the Christmas dinner…

Thursday 13th December:
Driving home for Christmas

…isn’t always as relaxing as Chris Rea suggests. In fact, when the boot’s packed to the brim with presents, you’re negotiating the M25 at a snail’s pace, and the kids are fighting in the back, it can be more like torture than festive fun.

So, make sure you’re prepared. With 4G mobile Wi-Fi your kids can connect their devices and stream, watch and play to their heart’s content (with a little help from Go Binge). And because you can connect up to 10 devices at a time, you can do that last-minute shopping or check Google Maps while you ride shotgun.

If you’ve got older kids it’s worth considering a Three SIM for their phone or tablet, so they can use as much data as they like with Go Binge without you having to stress about the cost. Then you can sit back and enjoy the ride while the UK’s Best Network for data takes care of the entertainment.

Wednesday 12th December:

Simply open up wuntu and grab your £3 pizza deal today, and next Monday too. You can get your chops around a 9.5in small pizza from the Domino’s menu. That’s 6 slices of cheesy goodness for just £3.

All you need is the wuntu app on your phone. It’s exclusive to all our lovely Three customers and it’s super quick and free to download. You can find it in the App Store on your iPhone or in Google Play on all Android devices. And you won’t regret it, because there are plenty of gorgeous deals to be had every day of the week.

How to get your Domino’s voucher.

  • Open up wuntu and go to the Domino’s deal.
  • Select ‘Use now’, then go to dominos.co.uk or pop into your local Domino’s before the day’s up.
  • Pick a 9.5in small pizza from the menu.
  • Enter your Domino’s wuntu code if you’re paying online, or show it to the cashier in store before you pay.

Your £3 pizza will need to be collected because the offer isn’t available for delivery, but don’t worry, you can pop out in your reindeer onesie and no-one will bat an eyelid. If you’re feeling particularly lazy or you’re feeding the tribe, just add extra toppings or additional pizzas to qualify for delivery (but you’ll have to pay for the additional items at standard menu prices). Check out wuntu’s Domino’s voucher terms & conditions for full details.

Sunday 2nd December:
How to take the best Christmas tree pics

Your tree is flawlessly decorated. It looks wonderful, not a single bauble out of place. When it comes to taking a photo of it for the ‘gram however, it doesn’t even look like a Christmas tree any more. So, avoid wasting time with photos that are never going to make it to your grid, use these top tips and make your post outshine all the other pictures of Christmas trees that are sure to be flooding your Insta-feed.

And, once you’ve perfected your technique, why not share your best Christmas pictures with us at HubCompetitions@three.co.uk and we’ll share our favourite here on the Hub, on Christmas Day.

Let in the light

Obviously, you want your twinkly fairy lights to be seen so, you turn the lights off but, it’d be good to actually see your tree and all the hard work you’ve put in getting the decorations perfectly placed too, right? So, what do you do? The first step is to make sure your flash is off – that just confuses the camera and ruins your pic. Next, a slow shutter speed’s best as it’ll let in most light. You can do this through your camera settings or with an app, like Camera + (iOS) or Footej Camera (Android). Remember to try and keep a steady hand when taking slowed-down images. Unless you fancy experimenting with ‘light painting’ in your Christmas pictures, that is.

If you don’t want to mess around with settings and apps, why not treat yourself to the Samsung Galaxy S9 with its incredible low-light camera. It does all the hard work for you, you just need to point and click.

Don’t go for the obvious

One way to make sure your Christmas pictures stand out from the rest, is to go a little bit abstract.

We’re talking reflections in baubles, extreme close-ups of your favourite decorations and different angles. Why not check out #christmastree on Instagram for some inspo, if you need it.

It’s not just about the tree…

No really, it’s not. Sure, 20 photos of your beautiful tree in all its festive glory might be nice to look at in a few years’ time but, don’t get so obsessed with angles, shutter speeds and close-ups that you forget the most important thing…the people that are around it (even if they are messing with your decorations) So, whether it’s your mum, your grandad or even your dog, get them in your Christmas pictures. The cuter the pic, the better.
