How it all works

Before you switch over from SMARTY to Three with a new 4G or 5G-compatible phone, there are a few things you need to know. Like SMARTY, we’ll always try to make things simple. Plus, we both use the same network – so no change there. 

Roaming

EU roaming isn’t included as standard at Three. However, you can use your phone in 71 destinations around the world if you buy Daily Roaming Passes, designed to suit your budget and travel plans

Before you make the switch

Before you make the final move to Three (porting your number and finishing with your SMARTY SIM), make sure to use up your SMARTY add-ons and data allowance. Maybe stream that box set you’ve been meaning to watch...

You can keep your current number

Moving your existing phone number across to Three is simple. Text the word PAC along with your Date of Birth (ddmmyy) to 65075 to take your phone number with you (e.g. ‘PAC 241285’ for a DoB of 24thDecember 1985).’

Alternatively, text STAC along with your Date of Birth (ddmmyy) to 75075 to terminate your phone number (e.g. ‘STAC 241285 for a DoB of 24th December 1985). ( ❗️ We cannot revert terminated numbers, so make sure this is what you’d like to do before requesting and using a STAC).

Affordability

Your new Airtime Plan with Three is over 24 months. But you can choose to spread the cost of your new device over 12, 24 or 36 months. This way, your monthly payments for your phone can stay within your budget. Please note that each April, your Airtime Plan monthly charge will increase by December’s consumer price index rate + 3.9%. 

To make sure you’re getting the most affordable deal, we’ll need to ask a few questions to carry out a standard credit check. You need to be over 18 for us to run this credit check.

Easy activation

Once your SIM arrives, put it in your phone and you’ll get a text confirming you’ve connected to Three. You’ll be ready to go in no time. If porting your number you can choose a convenient date to port, or it will be on the next working day.

SMARTY to Three FAQs

With SMARTY, when roaming in the EU, calls and texts to the UK and within the EU are unlimited, excluding if you're on a data-only plan. When roaming in the EU with SMARTY, data is also included in the EU, up to 12GB. If you're on a plan with data over 12GB, you will be subject to our fair use roaming limit of a 12GB EU data cap each plan month. International roaming outside of the EU is chargeable in accordance with SMARTY’s Price Guide.

With Three, unless stated otherwise, there’s a daily roaming charge to unlock your UK allowance for 24 hours in Go Roam destinations. You'll be charged as soon as you use any of your plan's allowances in a Go Roam destination.

Europe: £2 a day

Around the world: £5 a day

Republic of Ireland and Isle of Man are excluded from the daily charge. Fair use policies apply in Go Roam destinations, check out our FAQs for more info.

Three is SMARTY's parent company. Because of this, SMARTY uses Three's network, meaning there will be no change to your service or speeds when moving to Three.

 However, SMARTY is a distinct brand with its own mission and values.

SMARTY offers SIM-only plans and doesn’t sell or offer contracts on mobile phone handsets.  

You will need a PAC to retain your number, this is a porting authorization code which gives permission for your number to be transferred. The easiest way to get your PAC code from SMARTY is by SMS. Make sure to turn off your auto-renew too when leaving SMARTY

By SMS

  1. Text PAC along with your Date of Birth (ddmmyy) to 65075 to take your phone number with you to Three, e.g. PAC 241285 
    or  
    text STAC along with your Date of Birth (ddmmyy) to 75075 to terminate your phone number, e.g. STAC 241285. ( ❗️ We cannot revert terminated numbers, so make sure this is what you’d like to do before requesting and using a STAC.)

  1. You’ll receive an email and SMS with your code and it’ll also be visible at the top of your SMARTY dashboard.

Alternatively, you can get your PAC in the following ways:

Online

  1. Go to your SMARTY "Account settings". You’ll find this by logging in and clicking on "Menu" on the top right corner of your SMARTY dashboard.

  1. Click on "Manage plan" and under “Leave SMARTY", follow the steps to request a PAC.

  1. You’ll receive an email and SMS with your code and it’ll also be visible at the top of your SMARTY dashboard.

Webchat

Alternatively, you can request your PAC/STAC by contacting SMARTY’s support team via webchat at smarty.co.uk/contact.

If you choose a plan with Three you’ll receive a phone and SIM as part of a package, so you’ll probably want to cancel your SMARTY SIM (and make sure to turn off your auto renew).  

Both Three and SMARTY use the same network, so there’s no difference between the two in terms of signal and coverage.  

Three and SMARTY use the same mobile network, so you’ll experience no difference in speed.

SMARTY is owned by Three and so uses the same masts that Three does throughout the UK and Northern Ireland.  

Paying by Direct Debit is easy. We’ll take the balance from your preferred bank account on the same day each month and you never have to worry about paying your bill. By opting to pay by Direct Debit you’ll get £5 discount automatically every month and be protected by the Direct Debit guarantee. If you cancel your Direct Debit you will no longer receive the £5 monthly discount.

Terms and conditions

  • Airtime Plan monthly charge

    Each April, the Airtime Plan monthly charge will increase by December’s consumer price index rate + 3.9%. Airtime Plan monthly charge includes £5 discount for paying by a recurring method such as Direct Debit. The £5 monthly recurring payment discount and the CPI+3.9% annual price increase do not apply to Add-ons, out-of-allowance charges, Three Your Way device plan agreement payments, or Three Insurance premiums.
