The truth about those Google Pixel Fold rumours

June 27, 2023

If you’ve been watching the rumour mill, waiting for hints on what Google’s first foldable device will be like – the wait is over.

The hotly anticipated Google Pixel Fold was announced at Google I/O 2023 on 10 May, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. But which rumours were right? And which ones completely missed the mark?

Design

We’ve seen loads of theories about what the new Pixel Fold design would be like. From screen sizes to what colours it’d come in. And, of course, how was it going to fold? Would it fold flat or not quite?

The rumour:

The rumour was that the cover display would be around 5.79in. And the main screen would be approx 7.69in.

The facts:

The front or cover display measures in at 5.8in and is an FHD+ OLED display with super-durable Gorilla Glass Victus. And when unfolded, the main display is an impressive 7.6in OLED display with ultra-thin glass.

The rumour:

After a teaser video was posted by Twitter showing a light-coloured Pixel Fold, this sparked conversation about colour options. A range of colours was suggested, including arctic blue, obsidian, porcelain, and silver.

The facts:

That rumour was partly true; Google’s confirmed that there will be 2 colour variants: Porcelain and Obsidian.

The rumour:

Perhaps one of the most common rumours has been that although it’ll be a foldable device, the Pixel Fold won’t unfold flat. It would only go up to 176-179 degrees.

The facts:

Using the most durable hinge on a foldable device, the Pixel Fold unfolds 180 degrees to lie flat on a tabletop. It’s perfectly flush when folded up, too.

Cameras

Next up, we’ve got the camera set up. When Google posted their Pixel Fold teaser video, it showed a camera set-up that looked like other Pixel devices. But didn’t give away anything when it came to the actual size or number of cameras.

The rumour:

We’ve seen a few camera rumours – will it be a step down from the Pixel 6? Will it be a triple or dual-camera setup? Will it be the first foldable device with a flagship camera?

The facts:

Boasting the best camera on a foldable phone, Pixel Fold has a triple rear camera system. Made up of a 48MP main lens, 10.8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10.8MP dual PD telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom with super-res zoom up to 20x.

The front camera has a 9.5MP lens, and the inner camera is 8MP.

Google Pixel software rumours

Everyone’s been interested to know what software Google’s latest device would run on.

The rumour:

The rumour mill suggested that Google’s new foldable device would have the new Tensor G2 processor and pack a 4,500mAh battery with 23W charging.

The facts:

The Pixel Fold uses the Google Tensor G2 processor – it’s been custom-made for Pixel, after all. It makes the Pixel Fold fast and secure, with smooth multitasking and video streaming.

The battery rumour wasn’t far off, either. The 4,821mAh battery boasts a 24+ hour battery life and supports wireless charging.
